An-Naml · Makki · ayah 86 of 93

An-Naml 27:86

“Do they not see that We made the night that they may rest therein and the day giving sight? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.”

Essence

Every evening the world goes dark and every morning it opens its eyes; the One who turns light to darkness can turn death to life.

A reflection

A casino built to abolish the night

Somewhere in a desert city stands a casino with no clocks and no windows. The carpet is loud and the lights never dim. Everything in it is designed to make you forget whether it is noon or three in the morning. It is a whole industry's answer to the night: abolish it, and keep people playing.

Yet at four o'clock the dealers yawn. A man who has played since dinner finds his hands have gone slow. The building can hide the sky, but it cannot repeal what the body was made for. Sooner or later every guest goes up to a dark room and lies down.

The ayah speaks in the plural of majesty: annā jaʿalnā, 'that We made'. The night was made, and made for something. One classical commentary says that turning light into darkness, and darkness back into light, happens only by a power that overpowers and stands above everything. No ruler has delayed a single sunset. No company has bought a minute of extra daylight. We can only relabel the hours and build rooms that pretend.

That is meant to cut our pride down to size. The person who feels indispensable is switched off every night, like everyone else. The empire that thinks itself permanent goes dark on schedule. For a third of a life, the proudest person on earth lies helpless and unconscious, kept by a Power he never hired.

Does Allah need us to notice? The ayah asks, 'Do they not see?', and a question like that can sound like a demand for applause. But the One who made the night gains nothing when we notice it. We gain. Whoever sees that his rest was given stops treating it as an achievement. Humility here is not humiliation. It is simply accuracy about who turns the lights off and on.
