Al-Qasas 28:36
“But when Moses came to them with Our signs as clear evidences, they said, "This is not except invented magic, and we have not heard of this [religion] among our forefathers."”

Essence
Shown clear signs, Pharaoh's court answered with two labels, 'magic' and 'unheard of', because a label costs less than an answer.
A reflection
Certain inside, denying out loud
An accountant is called into his manager's office about a missing invoice. The client says it was never sent. The manager turns her screen round. There it is, in his own sent folder, dated and addressed. He looks at it for a long moment. Then he says the system must have put it there.
He is not confused. He knows exactly what he is looking at. What he cannot do is say the words 'I was wrong' in that room.
One classical commentator reads Pharaoh's court in the same way. They saw the signs, he says, examined them, and became certain they were from Allah. Then they turned to stubbornness and flat denial, out of tyranny and arrogance. Another ayah describes the same people almost in those terms. They rejected the signs, though their own souls were sure of them, out of wrongdoing and pride (27:14).
The word bayyināt matters here. The signs were not vague or arguable. They were clear, plain, manifest. A second commentator draws the obvious conclusion. Their reply proves they had been silenced and stunned. They found nothing to push back with except to call it magic and something unheard of.
That is a sobering picture of pride. It does not always look like a loud man boasting. Sometimes it looks like a quiet refusal to let the evidence finish its sentence. The ego would rather defend a position than lose face.
Most of us have a small version of this. A friend points out, kindly, that we were unfair in an argument. We know it the moment she says it. And something in us reaches for a reason, any reason, why it does not count. The court of Pharaoh is not as far away as it looks. The test is what we do in the moment after certainty arrives.
