Ghafir 40:34

“And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."”

Essence

They doubted Yusuf every day he lived, and the day he died they bolted the door behind him: Allah will never send anyone again.

A reflection

Honouring the dead prophet to refuse the living one

It is easy to read the end of this ayah as a kind of compliment. When Yusuf died, they said Allah would never send another messenger after him. Doesn't that sound like reverence? As if no one could ever measure up to him?

The commentaries read it the opposite way, and the ayah supports them. Fa-mā ziltum fī shakk: you never stopped doubting what he brought. They doubted him every day he lived. One commentary is precise about what their sentence was. It was not belief in Yusuf. It was a refusal of every messenger after him, added to their refusal of him. A ruling they made themselves, without any proof, so that they could deny the next one in advance.

Another commentary suggests a sharper version. Perhaps they doubted him openly while he lived, out of envy. Then, once he was safely dead, they praised him, and used that praise to shut the door on anyone else.

That is a pattern worth recognising. A school hangs a portrait in its hall of the headmistress who once defied the governors and saved it. The same school suspends the young teacher who defies the governors now. The rebel of the past is honoured precisely because she can no longer cause trouble.

The believer in Pharaoh's court was holding up a mirror. You did this before, he said, with Yusuf. You doubted him alive and closed the door on him dead. Now another messenger stands in front of you, and you are doing it again.
