Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 20 of 69
Al-'Ankabut 29:20
“Say, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Go out and look at how creation began; the One who began it will bring about the second creation, for nothing is beyond Him.
A reflection
The Name kept back for the hard part
Read the ayah slowly and notice where the Name appears. 'Look how He began creation.' There it is only a hidden 'He'. Then: 'Allah will bring about the second creation.' Here the Name stands out in full, placed first in the clause.
The classical commentators noticed this. The usual way to speak would hide the Name the second time, not the first. One of them explains why it was reversed. The dispute with the deniers was never about the beginning. It was about the return. That was where, in his phrase, the knees knocked together. So the Name is set down at the point of greatest doubt. The One who did the first is the One doing the second.
Picture a child on a school trip to a chalk cliff. She turns over a pale stone and finds the ribbed shape of a shell pressed into it. 'This was alive,' she says, and the whole class crowds round. For a moment she holds a beginning in her palm.
The root of badaʾa carries an established picture. It is a well dug fresh in untouched ground, where no one had dug before. That is the beginning the ayah asks us to study. Not a remodel. A first digging, with no model before it.
Here the ego meets its limit. We quietly draw the line of the possible around what we ourselves can do. We could never begin a living thing from nothing, so we assume nobody could repeat it. Pride makes our own reach the measure of His.
The ayah does not ask for applause. Allah gains nothing from our agreement. It asks us to stand where the child stood, with a beginning in our hand, and stop pretending we are the size of the question. The humble mind says: I have already seen the harder thing happen.
