Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 24 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:24

“And the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.”

Essence

With no answer to Ibrahim's proof, his people reached for fire; Allah brought him out of it whole, and believers read signs in that.

A reflection

When the only reply is to silence the speaker

Ibrahim has laid out his case. One God, the folly of idols, the return to Allah. The ayah then records his people's 'answer': 'Kill him, or burn him.'

One classical commentator asks the obvious question. How can that be called an answer? He gives two replies. First, it is the speech of the arrogant. A king may tell an envoy, 'Our answer is the sword.' The sword is not an answer. It means: I will not meet your words with words.

Second, and more pointed, the Quran calls it an answer to expose them. Someone who stays silent might be ignoring you. But someone who replies with something that is no reply at all has shown that he tried and could not. A bad answer reveals the lack of a good one.

Another commentator states it plainly. The proof had been established against them, so they turned to their rank and the strength of their rule.

Picture a quiet analyst in her first year at a firm. In a meeting, she points out that a key figure in her director's forecast is wrong. She is right, and the room knows it. Nobody answers her point. The next week she is moved off the project, 'for development reasons'.

The pattern is ancient, and it lives in every organisation. When an argument cannot be met, the temptation is to remove the person who made it.

For anyone who leads, this ayah is a mirror. Notice the moment you want to silence someone rather than answer them. That urge is often the clearest sign that you have no answer.

A good leader treats that moment as a gift. Ask the uncomfortable question again. Let the junior voice finish. Ibrahim's people had a prophet among them, and their only reply was fire.
