Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 60 of 69
Al-'Ankabut 29:60
“And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The creature that carries nothing for tomorrow is fed today, and you are named after it: the One who feeds both has heard your fear.
A reflection
Named on the same line as the robin
The ayah could have said: Allah provides for you, and for the creatures too. It says the reverse. Allāhu yarzuquhā wa-iyyākum: Allah provides for it, and for you. The weak creature is named first. You come second.
One classical commentator noticed the order and explained it. The aim was to clear the fear out of their minds in the most forceful way. So the creature that carries nothing is named, and then you are added to it, one more mouth on the same list.
Another classical commentator draws the sharper point. No one feeds those weak creatures except Allah. And no one feeds you either, you strong ones, though you can carry and earn. Had He not given you the strength and laid out the means, you would be more helpless than the creature that carries nothing.
Picture a tree surgeon in the cab of a crane at dawn, forty feet up. He pours coffee from a flask and looks down. A robin is working the strip of lawn his team cut yesterday, tugging up worms. He owns the crane, the van, the contracts and the firm. He has fed a family from it for twenty years.
The ayah puts him on the same line as the robin. Both woke this morning with nothing for today in hand. Both will be fed today by the same Giver. His crane is a longer beak, nothing more.
That is not an insult to his work. It is relief from a weight he was never built to carry. The ego likes to say 'I provide'. Then it must stay awake at night guarding the claim. Pride in being the provider is pride in a post that was never ours.
Nor is the reminder a request for applause. He feeds the robin, which will never know who fed it. Provision does not wait on praise. The reminder is given for our sake, so that we stop shaking.
