Ali 'Imran 3:107

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ٱبْيَضَّتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ فَفِى رَحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ

“But as for those whose faces turn white, [they will be] within the mercy of Allāh. They will abide therein eternally.”

Saheeh International

Essence

As for those whose faces turn bright, they are inside the mercy of Allah, and there they stay without end.

A reflection

You were inside it before you noticed

A man in his forties learns about a small family trust, set up by a relative nobody alive has met. For four generations it has quietly paid part of the school and college fees of every child in his family. He had always explained it differently. We are a family that values learning.

For his whole life he had been standing inside somebody's provision and calling it a trait of his own.

Now read the ayah's wording closely, because it is strange and we usually smooth it over. It does not say they are rewarded. It does not even say they are in a garden. It says they are in the mercy of Allah. One concise commentary glosses that as His Paradise, which is true. The wording still stands. The place they are in is named by one of His attributes.

And it is not a fresh arrangement. The lexicons give this root as tenderness, a leaning towards another. Its most physical form is the raḥim, the womb, named from bending over what it holds. That is established. Every reader of this ayah has already lived inside this word once.

So here is where the ego quietly deflates.

We talk about the next life like a statement of entitlements. Contributions made, years served, a figure accrued. The accounting language is so natural that we barely hear it. I have done my prayers. I keep my fasts. I have not done the big things.

The ayah does not describe people collecting. It describes people enclosed.

Which meets a sharp objection. If entry depends on His mercy, is all this devotion simply flattery, a long courtship of someone who likes being praised? Look at the ayah before this one and the one after. He wills no injustice to the worlds (3:108). Everything in the heavens and the earth is already His (3:109). A being who owns all of it cannot be bribed with compliments, and gains nothing from a full mosque.

So change one sentence this week. Not what have I earned. Ask instead what you have been standing inside without crediting it.
