Ali 'Imran 3:153
“[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allāh repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.”

Essence
You went away fast without turning your head while the Messenger called from behind; distress upon distress was given so you would not grieve.
A reflection
The version of the day that nobody narrated
An orienteering event uses electronic dibbers. A runner comes in sure he took the direct line to control seven. The download shows the loop he made, the ninety seconds he stood still, and the control he walked past twice. He is not lying. He has simply kept the version of the morning he could live with.
Every one of us runs on a narrated self. It is edited gently, every day, mostly without noticing. The edits are small and they all point the same way. After thirty years the gap between the account and the event is wide enough to live in. This is the quiet engine of pride. Not boasting. Just a long private habit of generous reporting.
Then look at what this verse does. Allah describes the running in the second person, to the men who did it. You were going away. You were not turning your head for anybody. The Messenger was behind you, calling. And He closes with khabīr: Allah is Aware of what you do. An uncut recording exists, and He holds it.
The ego's whole position depends on that recording not existing. If it does, there is nothing left to defend. There is nowhere to stand except in front of Him, which is the only safe place anyway.
Because notice what He does with the knowledge. He does not use it to shame them. He names the running, and then explains the distress they were given as something done so that they would not grieve. He had the full file and used it to treat them. That is a different kind of knowing from the kind we fear. A stranger with your file is a threat. The One who made you, who knows the running and names it and then goes on to heal you with it, is not.
Nobody who understands that verse ever needs to protect their own version again.
