Ali 'Imran 3:154
“Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allāh other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allāh." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allāh might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.”

Essence
After the distress He sent sleep down as security on some, while others, consumed with themselves, thought of Allah as ignorance thinks.
A reflection
The word they wanted was taken off them
A new father has read nine books. He built the cot himself, labelled every drawer, and printed a feeding chart for the fridge door. His daughter sleeps when she sleeps. Nothing he has done is wasted, and none of it is the deciding factor, and he will not accept that for about four months.
Listen to the exact words of the complaint in this verse. Hal lanā min al-amri min shayʾ. Is there anything of the matter for us? Any say at all? It is the sentence of a man who has discovered that he was not steering.
And look at the answer. It does not reassure them that they have some influence. It does not argue about percentages. It takes the word out of their mouth and puts it somewhere else entirely. Inna al-amra kullahū li-llāh. The matter, the whole of it, belongs to Allah.
This is the sentence the ego cannot sit next to. Our whole sense of being adult is built on having a say. We call it responsibility, which is honourable, and then quietly extend it into ownership, which is not. Pride is rarely about thinking you are better than others. Mostly it is about thinking you are the one deciding. Nothing dents it, because every outcome is read as evidence: the good ones prove the method, the bad ones prove the method was interfered with.
Then one hour arrives in which you are plainly not deciding. A diagnosis. A phone call. A line of men coming over a ridge.
And here is the part nobody expects. That sentence is not a demotion. It is the end of an exhausting job you were never qualified for. If the whole matter is His, it sits with One who is never tired, never spiteful and never short of options. This same verse closes by saying He knows what is inside your chest.
