Ali 'Imran 3:17

“The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allāh], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The people of Paradise hold their souls steady, stay true, stand still in prayer, give quietly and rise before dawn for forgiveness.

A reflection

Holding your own soul

A man who has gambled away two years of savings gives his bank card to his wife. For twelve months she keeps it in her purse. Twice he asks for it back, late at night, with a good reason ready. Twice she says no, and he thanks her in the morning.

Ṣabr is often heard as passive endurance: gritting your teeth and waiting for bad things to stop. The first picture in the root is sharper. It is holding something in place, as an animal was kept tied. An old battle poem gives the human version: I held my free soul there, anchored, when a coward's soul strains to run. Ṣabr is taking hold of your own soul.

The commentaries describe three arenas for it. Patience in doing what Allah commands, when it is tiring. Patience in keeping away from what He forbids, when it is tempting. And patience with what He decrees, when it hurts. The man with the bank card is practising the second kind every evening.

So ṣabr is not the absence of action. It is one of the most active things a person can do: holding a straining soul to its course. That is why the ayah puts it first in the list of the people of Paradise.

Which of the three is your hardest at the moment? Steady obedience, steady refusal, or steady acceptance? Name it. Then find your version of the bank card in the purse. Choose one practical way to hold your soul in place, and someone you trust to help you hold it.
