Ali 'Imran 3:172

“Those [believers] who responded to Allāh and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allāh is a great reward -”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who answered Allah and the Messenger after the wound had struck them: for the ones who did good and feared Him, a great reward.

A reflection

The same proposal, back on the agenda next week

A man is shouted down in a meeting. The following week he puts the same proposal back on the agenda. Nothing about the proposal has changed. Something about him has been settled.

The timing in this ayah is the whole of it.

The commentaries place it immediately after the defeat. The idolaters had withdrawn, reached a halt on the road, and regretted leaving the job unfinished. One commentary reports their reasoning: we killed most of them and only a few are left, so why did we leave them. They decided to come back.

Word of this reached the city, where the wounded were.

Sahih Muslim and another collection record what followed. The Prophet's wife said to her nephew: your two fathers were among those who answered Allah and the Messenger after the wound struck them. The second collection names them: Abu Bakr and al-Zubayr. One commentary adds the Prophet's words when he feared the enemy would return. Who will go out to these people, so that they know we have strength in us.

And they went, with the wounds of the previous afternoon still open.

What is praised here is not the fighting. There was no battle at that halt. What is praised is the interval: the gap between a defeat and the next attempt, and theirs was measured in hours.

This is the most transferable thing in the whole passage, and the least dramatic.

Because almost everybody recovers eventually. The difference between people is not whether they go back, but how long they take, and what they do to themselves in the meantime. A long interval fills with narrative. By week three the explanation has set, the roles have been assigned, and going back would mean contradicting a story you have told several people.

Short intervals do not allow a story to form.

And notice what made it short for them. Not a recovered mood. A call. They were not waiting until they felt ready; they were waiting to be asked, and the asking came while they still hurt.

So take the thing you were knocked back on. Put it back in front of the same people this week, with no preamble and no reference to what happened. The interval is the only part of this you control, and it shortens by decision rather than by healing.
