Ali 'Imran 3:171

“They receive good tidings of favor from Allāh and bounty and [of the fact] that Allāh does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -”

Saheeh International

Essence

They receive glad news of a blessing from Allah and bounty, and that Allah does not let the believers' wage go to waste.

A reflection

A wage is a splint, not a bonus

A tradesman photographs every job he finishes. The pictures go into a folder nobody has ever asked to see. He cannot quite say why he takes them, only that an unrecorded job feels like a job that did not happen.

The last two words of this ayah are worth taking apart, because both roots are concrete.

The first is the word for a wage. The lexicons give it two branches that meet. One is a worker's hire, the pay for his labour. The other is a broken bone knitting back together: ujirat yaduhu, his hand was set. One lexicon joins them. A wage is what restores the worker after the strain of his work, as a setting restores a broken bone. That is established.

So ajr is not a bonus on top of a life. It is the splint for what the effort cost.

The second root is the one under does not let go to waste. The lexicons give it as a thing slipping away, gone and perished. A man's ḍayʿa was his land or his craft. One explanation is that it is so called because it is lost if nobody keeps checking on it.

A field going quietly to ruin because no one walks out to it. That is the picture being denied.

And now the part that touches pride, which is not where we expect it. The photographs in the folder are not vanity. They are insurance against the field. Almost every form of self-promotion comes from the same place: the fear that effort which nobody logs has evaporated. So we mention things. We let people know. We keep the receipt, in case.

This ayah does not say that the logging is wrong. It says the ledger already exists, kept by One who does not let the entries slip.

So does He announce His reliability because He wants to be thanked for it? Notice what the sentence is for. It is reported here as glad news being received by the dead, about the living. He is not asking anybody to admire His bookkeeping. He is telling exhausted people that nothing has drained away.

And the humbling part is simple. If the field is tended, your reminders were never load-bearing.

So pick the one effort you most want somebody to know about. Decide not to mention it for a month. Then notice how much energy you had been spending on tending a field that was never yours.
