Ali 'Imran 3:30

“The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allāh warns you of Himself, and Allāh is Kind to [His] servants."”

Essence

Every deed will be waiting on that Day; the One who warns you of it now does so because He is gentle.

A reflection

A warning given gently

A grandmother tells her grandson something he does not want to hear. The friend he admires is using him, and will drop him once he stops being useful. He storms out. An hour later he comes back, and she has made his favourite dinner. The warning and the dinner came from the same place.

The ayah repeats a sentence from two ayat earlier: wa yuḥadhdhirukumu llāhu nafsah, Allah warns you of Himself. One commentary notes the repetition is for emphasis. Then it adds something the earlier ayah did not: wa-llāhu raʾūfun bi-l-ʿibād, and Allah is gentle with His servants. One modern commentary joins the two halves directly. Allah is kind to His servants, and that is why He warns them.

The root of raʾūf pictured a father bending over his child with the softest kind of care. One lexicon says raʾfa is more particular and more delicate than raḥma, mercy. Mercy can come through a hardship for a person's good. Raʾfa hardly ever comes as anything unpleasant at all.

The ego hears warnings as insults. Pride says: who are you to tell me? But a warning is only given by someone who cares what happens to you. Enemies stay silent and wait.

Why would Allah warn us of Himself? He gains nothing from our caution. He is free of need of the worlds (29:6). The warning is the gentleness. He tells us now, in this life, what the Day will hold, so that no one meets it by surprise.

Think of the last warning you resented. Ask whether it came from someone who cared. Then thank them, and the One who warns you most gently of all.
