Ali 'Imran 3:31
“Say, [O Muḥammad], "If you should love Allāh, then follow me, [so] Allāh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."”

Essence
Love of Allah is proven by following His Messenger, and its reward is greater than the love itself: being loved by Him.
A reflection
Not that you love, but that you are loved
A boy writes to his favourite footballer at the start of every season. In his mind, the letters are his gift: loyalty offered to someone far above him. One spring a shirt arrives in the post, signed, with the boy's own name printed on the back. He does not sleep that night.
Read the ayah's promise slowly. 'If you love Allah, follow me, yuḥbibkumu llāh: Allah will love you.' The people addressed had made a claim about their own love. The answer does not merely accept the claim. It offers something of a different order: His love for them.
A classical commentator saw the gap at once. You asked to love; you are given to be loved, and the second is far greater than the first. He records a saying of the wise: the matter is not that you love, but that you are loved.
This is where the ego shrinks. We tend to picture our love for Allah as something we bestow, a credit in our favour. The ayah turns the picture round. Our love is a small, wavering thing, quick to cool. His love is the prize, and He decides on what terms it is given.
Then the ayah closes with two of His names. Ghafūr, whose forgiveness covers like a helmet over the head. Raḥīm, whose mercy reaches the one who comes. The door is wide, and the One behind it needs nothing from those who enter.
Someone may ask why Allah sets conditions on His love, as if He needed to be pursued. He is free of all need (35:15). Nothing in our following adds to Him. The condition is not a price He charges. It is the shape of the road that leads a creature to the place where it is loved.
The boy's letters did not earn the shirt. They only showed where his heart was turned. Allah's love, when it comes, is never a wage. It is a gift that finds the one already walking towards it.
