Ali 'Imran 3:44

“That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens[124] as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.”

Essence

This story is news of the unseen, revealed to a Prophet who was not there when the scholars cast their pens for Maryam.

A reflection

What no archive holds

A documentary team reconstructs a shipwreck from sonar scans, cargo manifests and the logbook of a ship that passed nearby. The film is brilliant. At the end, the narrator admits the obvious. No one will ever know what the captain said to his crew in the last hour.

Every human history has that edge. We have the records, never the room. 'That is from the news of the unseen, which We reveal to you'. The lexicons picture ghayb as the sun after it has set: still there, still shining, only hidden from your eyes. Nabaʾ, news, is pictured as something arriving from beyond the horizon, like a flood from rain no one there had seen.

Allah does not reconstruct. He knows the room. He knew what ʿImrān's wife whispered over her womb and what Zakariyyā asked in the dark. He heard what the scholars said as they argued over a baby girl. A major early commentator stresses that only a few scholars among the People of the Book knew these hidden details at all.

This is where the ego of human knowledge is set in its place. We are proud, rightly, of what research can recover. But our best reconstruction is still from the outside. The One who speaks in this ayah was present in every room, because nothing is outside Him.

Does Allah need to point this out? He needs nothing (35:15). The reminder is for us, so that we hear His stories differently. They are not legends polished by retelling. They are accounts from the only witness who saw everything.

The lexicons describe waḥy, revelation, as a quick sign passed privately to one person in a crowded room. Swift, private, unmistakable. The documentary will be remade one day with new evidence. This account will not need to be.
