Ar-Rum 30:40

“Allāh is the one who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then will give you life. Are there any of your "partners" who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.”

Essence

Your whole life fits in four of His verbs, from creation to the rising, and nothing you lean on can perform one of them.

A reflection

Four verbs, and you are the object of each

Read the first half of the ayah slowly and notice who does what. Allāhu alladhī khalaqakum: Allah is the One who created you. Thumma razaqakum: then provided for you. Thumma yumītukum: then causes you to die. Thumma yuḥyīkum: then gives you life.

Four verbs, one subject. You are not the subject of a single one. You are the object of all four, the 'you' attached to the end of each verb.

Picture a retired engineer drafting his own obituary, as some people now do. He lists fifty achievements over three pages. Bridges, patents, a scholarship in his name. Then he reads this ayah. His whole life, from first breath to the rising, fits into four verbs. And he performed none of them. He did not choose to exist. He did not grow his own eyes. He will not schedule his own death, and he cannot raise himself.

That is where the ego quietly shrinks. Not because the fifty achievements are worthless. They were real, and he was given the strength for them. But they all happened inside the second verb, razaqakum. They were provision, handed to him along the way. The frame around them was never his.

A reader may ask why Allah lists His own deeds at all. Does He need us to admire Him? The ayah answers in its own next line. The list is not a request for applause. It is evidence laid before people who were giving His place to others. One early commentator explained the closing subḥānahu: He glorifies Himself when a slander is said about Him. A person clearing his name from a false charge is not vain. He is setting the record straight. Allah is far above needing even that, so the setting straight is for us. We are the ones who forget whose verbs we live inside.
