As-Sajdah 32:8

ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ

“Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every lineage, however proud, was drawn out like a single hair from dough, from a water nobody counted as precious.

A reflection

Every pedigree starts the same way

At a wedding reception, an uncle introduces himself to a stranger. He gives his grandfather's title, the village the family once 'owned' and the famous cousin. By the time he reaches his own name, the stranger has stopped listening.

This ayah quietly ends that speech. 'Then He made his descendants from an extract of a slight water'. The first human was begun from clay (32:7). After him, every one of us, the titled and the nameless, began in the same way. The commentaries say it plainly: His offspring, reproducing in this way, from a drop.

The ego leans on pedigree. It wants to have come from somewhere that matters, so that it matters too. Family names, schools, postcodes, the right accent. This ayah does not deny that families differ in what they pass on. It denies that any of it changes what we are made of.

The word for that water, mahīn, is not glamorous. One early commentator glosses it as weak. He traces it to a verb used of a man who slips and grows feeble. Another commentary calls it a thing held cheap, which no one takes care of.

Why would Allah remind us of this? Not to humiliate us, and not because He needs us small. He is free of all need (35:15). He reminds us because pride is a lie about where we came from, and lies make us unhappy. The uncle at the wedding is tiring to listen to, and more tiring to be.

The One who made something of nothing much is the only one who needs no pedigree. Everyone else is drawn from the same slight water. There is a strange freedom in that. You have nothing to live up to except the One who made you.
