Al-Mursalat 77:20

أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ

“Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Did We not create you from a fluid held cheap: the very same humble, overlooked beginning behind every person who has ever thought too much of themselves.

A reflection

The word that will not let you forget

Mahin describes the kind of thing nobody treats as precious: the lexicons picture it through mahna, ordinary daily work and the clothes worn for it, the things used so routinely that no one stops to admire them. Applied to the fluid a person begins from, the word is doing something deliberately deflating: not a poetic euphemism softening an awkward biological fact, but a plain insistence that your own beginning was, materially, about as unremarkable as a worn pair of work clothes.

This particular ayah arrives immediately after a sustained run of questions about destroyed civilisations and the deserved, harvested punishment of the guilty, and the turn the surah makes here is sharply, deliberately pointed. Having just described the guilty receiving exactly what their own hands harvested, the Quran now asks the proud among them to trace their own origin back to its actual starting point, not a grand or dignified source, but ma'in mahin, held cheap, barely worth a second glance.

Most pride needs some kind of flattering origin story to sustain itself over time: a notable family name, an impressive natural talent, a rare and celebrated achievement that sets a person apart from everyone around them. This ayah quietly strips that entire story down to its most basic, shared material fact, true without exception of every single human being who has ever lived, regardless of what any of them later became, and asks plainly whether any amount of subsequent achievement can really justify forgetting how genuinely unremarkable the actual starting point was. A tower built from the humblest available bricks is still, underneath whatever polish and decoration was later added to its surface, a tower built from humble bricks, and no amount of later ornamentation changes what the foundation itself was made of.
