Al-Ahzab 33:29
“But if you should desire Allāh and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter - then indeed, Allāh has prepared for the doers of good among you a great reward."”

Essence
Choosing Allah, His Messenger and the home that lasts is not choosing less: it is choosing a reward great in every direction.
A reflection
You have heard this as choosing poverty
The inherited reading of this ayah is simple, and a little sad. The Prophet's wives chose poverty for the sake of the Hereafter. Faith on one side, comfort on the other. Holy women picked the thin side.
Read the words again. What do they want, in this second option? Not 'poverty'. Not even, first of all, 'the Hereafter'. The first object of their wanting is Allah Himself. Then His Messenger. Then the home that comes after. The ayah does not describe giving something up. It describes wanting Someone.
The verb is turidna, you want. Its root pictures the rāʾid, the scout a desert tribe sent riding ahead to search for grass and water. A proverb said the scout does not lie to his people, because their lives hang on his report. Irāda, wanting, is the scout you send ahead of your life. Where it rides, the whole caravan will follow.
So the question is not how little you can live with. It is where your scout is riding. One option sends it towards the near pasture, lovely and seasonal. The other sends it towards Allah. That is not a poorer destination. It is the source of every pasture there is.
The commentaries add something the folk version forgets. After they chose, Allah combined for them the good of this world and the happiness of the next. They did not lose the world by not wanting it most. They simply stopped being owned by it.
The ayah then names what is waiting: a great reward. One commentary explains the word 'great' with a mountain. It is called great only when it is high and wide and deep at once. Hold that mountain in mind. Everything else in this ayah is measured against it.
