Al-Ahzab 33:30

“O wives of the Prophet, whoever of you should commit a clear immorality - for her the punishment would be doubled two fold, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.”

Essence

The nearer you stand to the light, the darker any stain shows; no rank or relation makes anyone too important to answer to Allah.

A reflection

Too well connected to be called to account?

The ayah ends on a short line that carries enormous weight. 'And that is easy for Allah.'

One commentary explains what it rules out. Being married to the Prophet ﷺ, being noble and honoured, would not push the consequence away. Allah's affairs are not like those of His creatures. Among people, it is hard to punish the powerful. They have allies, helpers and intercessors, and brothers who will make calls. Another commentary is sharper still. Their closeness to the Prophet would not shield them. It was the very reason the stakes were doubled.

Think of how often human justice stalls at the top. A wealthy defendant's lawyers file a fourth adjournment, then a fifth. Witnesses lose heart. The case grows old and quiet. Nobody announces that the rich are exempt. It simply becomes difficult to reach them.

With Allah there is no such difficulty. The root of yasīr pictures a mare on light, sure legs, easy to lead. What is heavy for human courts moves lightly for Him. No legal team, no family name and no famous husband changes the weight.

This is where the ego is meant to shrink. Most of us carry a quiet sense of exemption. I pray, so I am safe. My family is religious. I have done so much good. The ayah takes that sense and tests it against the most honoured women of the community. If their closeness was no shield, what is yours?

Is this Allah boasting of His power to punish? Look at whom the line protects. It is addressed to the top of the ladder, and it reassures everyone beneath it. The weak can trust a Judge whom no one is too big for. A ruler who cannot touch the powerful protects nobody. This one can, and so He protects everyone.
