Al-Ahzab · Madani · ayah 60 of 73

Al-Ahzab 33:60

“If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease[1212] and those who spread rumors in al-Madīnah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Hidden disbelief, a sick heart and a rumour-spreading tongue are warned by oath: stop, or lose the best neighbourhood you were ever given.

A reflection

An oath spoken over a whispering city

The ayah opens with a small letter that changes its weight. La-in: the lām of an oath, the commentaries say, followed by an oath's answer. Allah swears that if these people do not stop, He will set His Messenger against them.

Think of who was listening. People who had learned to live two lives. They prayed in the rows and mocked in the alleys. They spread bad news whenever an expedition left the city. They believed they were managing things rather well. Nobody could prove anything. Their secrets felt safe.

Into that confidence comes a voice that owns the city, the night and every heart in it. It does not argue. It does not ask for their good opinion. It swears.

One classical commentator notices a detail in what follows. Had Allah willed, he writes, He could have emptied Madina of them in an instant with a single word: Be. But He chose that it happen through His Messenger. That is why the ayah says except a little: there would be a time, however short.

Here the ego is cut down to size. The hypocrite's whole craft is controlling what others see. He imagines himself the clever one in the room. The ayah reveals that the room, the city and the clever one himself are all in another Hand.

Does Allah swear because He needs to sound strong? The opposite. Real power does not bluster; it warns. The oath is placed before a condition: if they do not stop. It is a door held open with a firm voice. A king who wanted only to crush would not warn first. This King warns, because He would rather they turned back.
