Al-Ahzab · Madani · ayah 62 of 73
Al-Ahzab 33:62
سُنَّةَ ٱللَّهِ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّةِ ٱللَّهِ تَبْدِيلًا
“[This is] the established way of Allāh with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allāh any change.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every emptied house of those who came before tells one story: Allah's way with those who spread corruption, and nobody has ever rewritten it.
A reflection
The way that never needs a new edition
Most rules we live under keep changing. A company's code of conduct is rewritten each time a new chief executive arrives. Each version promises to be the final word. Staff learn to wait, because the next edition is always coming.
We revise because we learn, and because we were wrong. A good rule-maker admits it. Revision is the honest mark of a limited mind.
This ayah says Allah's way has no next edition. You will never find any change in the way of Allah. One classical commentator gives the reason. It rests on a foundation of wisdom, he writes, so He does not change it. And how far beyond anyone else it is to change it.
Here the ego is made to sit down. We are used to bargaining with rules. We find the exception, wait out the leader, lobby for the amendment. The hypocrites of Madina were experts at it. They assumed this new order would be one more arrangement to manage, then outlast.
The ayah closes that door. There is no committee, no successor, no loophole. The way of the One who made the heavens and the earth does not wait for a new chief executive.
Why does Allah stress this? Not because He needs us to admire His constancy. The line was spoken to a messenger surrounded by whispers, and to a small community under strain. For them, a way that cannot change is a mercy. The promises made to them will not be quietly withdrawn. The threats made to those who harmed them will not be quietly forgotten.
The arrogant hear unchangeableness as a wall. The humble hear it as solid ground.
