Saba 34:41

“They will say, "Exalted are You! You, [O Allāh], are our benefactor excluding [i.e., not] them. Rather, they used to worship the jinn; most of them were believers in them."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The angels refuse the worship given them, declare Allah far above it, choose Him alone as their ally, and name who was really being obeyed.

A reflection

The first word is not a defence

The angels have just been asked whether people worshipped them. Their first word is not about themselves. It is subḥānaka.

The lexicons explain tasbīḥ as tanzīh, and tanzīh means putting at a distance. The Arabs said subḥāna min someone in wonder: how far he is from that. So the angels' first act is to put distance between Allah and the claim made about Him. That sense is established.

The short explanations fill it in. Exalted are You above having any partner. One commentator gives the angels' meaning: we declare You far above anyone else being worshipped. You are our object of worship, and the object of worship of all creation.

Notice what they do not say first. They do not say: it was not our fault. They do not protect their reputation. Their reflex, under the most searching question, is to clear their Lord's name before their own.

Picture a surgeon after a long operation that saved a young man's life. The family come out to meet him. The grandmother drops to her knees to kiss his hands. He quickly lifts her up, embarrassed. He says: please, not to me. I only held the instruments. Thank the One who kept him alive.

That is a small human likeness of this scene. The angels are offered the highest pedestal there is: worship. They step down from it at once.

This is where the ego shrinks. We are offered far smaller pedestals every day. A compliment, a title, a grateful message, a crowd that laughs at our jokes. Most of us climb up without a second thought.

Someone may ask why Allah should need even the angels to declare His glory. He needs nothing. Subḥānaka is not flattery offered to a ruler. It is the plainest truth told aloud. Whoever says it is protected from the lie of sharing His place.
