Saba 34:40

“And [mention] the Day when He will gather them all and then say to the angels, "Did these [people] used to worship you?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

On the Day He gathers everyone, Allah will ask the angels whether these people worshipped them, so that the honoured ones can disown it aloud.

A reflection

A gathering no one is excused from

The ayah begins with a verb the first hearers knew from hard years: yaḥshuruhum, He gathers them.

The lexicons record that a drought year ḥasharat a tribe. It drove every household out of the open desert and into the towns. A poet said of such a year that neither wild beast nor man escaped its ḥashr. So this is gathering that drives. No one opts out. That picture is established.

Then comes jamīʿan: all of them. The commentators include everyone in that word. The worshippers and the worshipped. The proud leaders and the weak who followed them. The idols' devotees and the angels whose names they used.

Picture census night. A form is delivered to every address in the land. A duke in his country house fills in the same boxes as a young man on a bunk in a hostel. Neither can tick 'exempt'. For one night, the state counts everyone the same way.

The ḥashr is that, without the paperwork and without any address left out. The person who has not queued for anything in thirty years will stand in this one. The influencer and the cleaner, the scholar and the sceptic: gathered, together, by One who needs no list.

This is where the ego shrinks. Most pride rests on exemption. The private lane, the side entrance, the name that gets you seen sooner. Jamīʿan quietly removes every one of them.

Someone may object that the scene sounds like a show trial. Why gather everyone and question them in public? Does Allah need an audience? One classical commentator gives a humbler reason. The account is told to us now, he says, as a kindness to whoever hears it and a restraint on whoever it describes. The public Day is described in advance, in private, so that no one need be surprised by it. A Lord who wanted to humiliate would not warn.
