Saba 34:42

“But today [i.e., the Day of Judgement] you do not hold for one another [the power of] benefit or harm, and We will say to those who wronged, "Taste the punishment of the Fire, which you used to deny."”

Essence

On that Day no one holds benefit or harm for anyone else, and those who misplaced their worship meet the Fire they called a fiction.

A reflection

Already true, only shown that Day

Fa-l-yawma: so today. The word sounds as if something new begins on that Day. One classical commentary notices that it does not. No created thing ever truly owned benefit or harm. The ayah names the Day only because that is where the idolaters had pinned their hopes.

Another commentary draws the line between two worlds. This life is a place of testing, it says, where people are left free among one another. They help and hurt each other, and it looks like their own power. That Day is the place of reward. The One who rewards and punishes is Allah alone, so nobody else harms or helps.

Picture a son who has managed his ageing father's affairs for six years. His signature moves money, pays the carers and settles the bills. The bank staff know his face. Then his father dies on a Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning the same signature, in the same pen, is politely refused. Nothing about the son has changed. The authority was never his; it was lent, and the lending has ended.

That is the shape of this ayah. Every hand that ever helped you or hurt you was holding something on loan. The Day simply returns the loans to their Owner, and everyone sees it at once.

It is humbling, and it is meant to be. The ego lives on the belief that it holds things: a reputation, a network, a say in other people's lives. Here is the plain correction. You held them the way a cashier holds the till.

Is it vanity for Allah to declare that He alone holds benefit and harm? Vanity is claiming more than you have, to win admiration you need. Allah claims exactly what is true, and needs nothing from anyone (35:15). The declaration is for the listener. It frees him from bowing to people who never held what he feared or hoped for.
