Saba 34:44
“And We had not given them any scriptures which they could study, and We had not sent to them before you, [O Muḥammad], any warner.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who called the Quran a forgery had no book of their own to stand on and no earlier warner; their certainty rested on nothing.
A reflection

The ayah before recorded three confident verdicts: a man with a motive, a forged lie, plain magic. This ayah asks a quiet question in reply. On what basis?
A classical theologian sets out the rule of fair argument. Clear proofs can only be answered in two ways. Either with sound reasoning, or with a reliable transmitted source: a scripture from Allah, or a report from His messenger. The Makkans offered no reasoning. And, says this ayah, they had no scripture and no messenger either.
Another commentary makes the comparison explicit. Even the People of the Book, when they argued wrongly, had something to point to. They could say: we have scriptures and laws, and messengers sent by Allah. The idolaters could not say even that. Their denial had nothing to hold on to, not even a doubtful foothold.
Elsewhere the Quran presses the same point. Have We given them a book before it, which they hold fast to (43:21)? Or sent down an authority that speaks for what they associate (30:35)?
Picture a long meeting about a new idea. A senior manager blocks it. 'It's against policy.' Someone politely asks which policy. The room searches the shared drive, the handbook and the archive. Nothing turns up. The 'policy' was a feeling, given the voice of a document.
That is what the ayah exposes. Confidence borrowed the tone of authority without the authority itself.
The sceptic may reply that a book proves nothing either. Anyone can wave a book. That is true, and the Quran does not ask to be accepted because it is a book. It invites testing (4:82). The objection here is narrower. The deniers demanded proof from the Prophet while holding a position that had none. Fair argument asks for the same standard on both sides of the table.
