Saba 34:43

“And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, they say, "This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping." And they say, "This is not except a lie invented." And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is not but obvious magic."”

Essence

Clear ayat were recited, and three verdicts came back at once: a man with a motive, a forged lie, an obvious spell.

A reflection

Three ways to refuse without answering

The ayah records three sentences, and each begins the same way: this is nothing but. One classical commentary notices that each 'this' points somewhere different. The first points at the Prophet. The second points at the Quran. The third points at the truth as a whole, the entire matter of prophethood and the religion.

So the reply attacks the messenger, then the message, then the effect. None of the three engages with what the ayat actually said.

Picture a quality inspector at a large bakery. She photographs mould spreading in a flour silo and files a report. In the managers' meeting, three answers come back. One says she is angling for the supervisor's post. Another says the photos could be from anywhere. A third says she has a gift for making things sound dramatic. Forty minutes pass. Nobody walks down to the silo.

That is the anatomy the ayah lays bare. A motive is invented for the speaker. The evidence is declared fabricated. And the persuasive force of the report is itself turned into an accusation, as if being convincing were the crime.

A classical theologian puts the core of it in one line. They met proof with imitation. Clear evidence can only be answered with better evidence, or with a reliable source. They brought neither, so they brought labels.

The pattern is worth learning to spot, in others and in ourselves. When a reply is all about the speaker's motive, the content has not been answered. When 'fabricated' is said without a single error shown, the label is doing the work. When something is dismissed as 'just persuasive', ask what persuaded.

The bakery story ends one of two ways. Somebody walks down to the silo, or a customer falls ill. The Makkans had the ayat recited to them. The silo door was open. They held the meeting instead.
