Ar-Rum 30:35

أَمْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنًا فَهُوَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يُشْرِكُونَ

“Or have We sent down to them an authority [i.e., a proof or scripture], and it speaks of what they have been associating with Him?”

Saheeh International

Essence

One question takes the ground from every partner set beside Allah: where is the warrant for it, and does it speak?

A reflection

They carried the evidence in their own mouths

A small dinghy turns over in a sudden squall, half a mile from a holiday beach. One of the four men in the water has spent the whole week mocking his friend's prayers. Now, clinging to the hull, he is shouting 'God, please, God' over and over. A lifeboat reaches them in twenty minutes. By the evening barbecue he is joking about it.

Two ayat earlier, the surah described exactly this: harm touches people, and they call on their Lord alone, turning back to Him. Then relief comes, and a party of them return to their partners.

Now comes the question: have We sent them some authority that speaks for those partners? One classical commentator draws out what the question exposes. These people speak without knowledge, he says. More than that, they know the opposite. In the moment of harm they themselves went straight to Allah.

So the evidence against their partners was never far away. It came out of their own mouths in the water. Nobody shouts for the lucky charm when the boat goes over. Nobody calls on the market, the connections or the clever plan. The heart, stripped of its noise, knows exactly whom to call.

The ayah does not need a long argument. It asks for the document behind the partnership. The only document on file is the prayer they made when they were drowning, and it names One.

This cuts close to home for a believer too. What do you credit when the rescue has passed? Whose name was on your lips when the test results were due?
