Fatir 35:23

إِنْ أَنتَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ

“You, [O Muḥammad], are not but a warner.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Four words fix the warner's task: to see the danger, feel it first, and say it with love, leaving the hearing to Allah.

A reflection

A hand hooked in your belt

What does a warner look like? The Prophet ﷺ answered that himself, in a likeness reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

My example and yours, he said in meaning, is that of a man who lit a fire. When it lit up the ground around it, moths and small creatures began to fall into it. He kept pulling them back. They kept overpowering him and plunging in. 'And I am holding you by your belts, away from the Fire,' he said, 'and you are rushing into it.'

Notice the posture. A warner, in this picture, is not a man on a hilltop pointing. He is close enough to touch. His hand is hooked into your waistband. He is pulling against your weight.

Picture a crowded platform at rush hour. An older brother, maybe fourteen, stands with his little brother of six. The train is coming in fast and the crowd surges forward. Without a word, the older boy hooks two fingers through the strap of his brother's rucksack. The little one strains towards the edge to see the engine. The older one leans back. Nobody on the platform notices. That small backward lean is the whole of the job.

So when this ayah says 'you are only a warner', read 'only' with that picture. It does not shrink the warner into a loudspeaker. It describes a man spending his strength on other people's safety. The surah has already told him not to let his soul waste away in grief over them (35:8).

And it tells you what it costs. Moths do not thank you. They resist. A warner who expects gratitude will give up within a week. One who loves the people he warns will keep his fingers in the strap.
