Fatir 35:38
“Indeed, Allāh is Knower of the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and earth. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.”
Saheeh International
Essence
He knows everything hidden in the heavens and the earth, and the most hidden thing of all: what your chest carries.
A reflection
Messages that vanish, and a chest that keeps everything
A man sets his messaging app so that every chat deletes itself after twenty-four hours. He has nothing terrible to hide. He simply likes the feeling that what he says leaves no trace. Most of us manage our traces in smaller ways. The cropped photo, the edited post, the version of events we tell at work.
The ayah begins at the widest possible scale. Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth. Everything screened from every eye, across the whole of creation. Then it narrows, suddenly, to a space a few inches wide: He knows what lies within the chests.
One classical linguist explained why that second clause follows. If He knows what is in the chests, which is the most hidden thing there is, then He knows every unseen thing in the world. The chest is the hardest case. Solve that, and everything else follows.
This is where the ego shrinks. So much of our pride lives in what others cannot see. The reputation that is slightly better than the reality. The generous image, the patient image, the devout image. Before Him, image management simply has no material to work with. He is not looking at the image.
Does that make Him a watcher who wants to intimidate? Consider who benefits from His knowing. Surveillance serves the watcher, who gains power by it. Allah gains nothing; He is the Rich, needing no one. His knowledge serves the known. The falsely accused, the unseen kindness, the intention nobody believed. All of it is kept.
So you can stop curating for Him. Turn off the self-deleting settings of the heart. Bring Him the real version. It is the only one He has ever seen anyway.
