Fatir 35:39
“It is He who has made you successors upon the earth. And whoever disbelieves - upon him will be [the consequence of] his disbelief. And the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them in the sight of their Lord except in hatred; and the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them except in loss.”

Essence
He placed you where others stood before; whoever refuses Him carries the cost alone, and each refusal deepens loathing and loss.
A reflection
Your name is only the latest stamp on the slip
Open an old library book and you may find the date slip still glued inside the cover. Rows of stamps run down it, purple and fading. 1983. 1991. 2004. Each stamp was someone who carried this book home and read it in bed. For a fortnight each of them believed it was theirs. Then they handed it back. Your stamp is simply the newest.
The ayah opens with that same quiet fact about the earth: huwa alladhī jaʿalakum khalāʾifa fī al-arḍ. It is He who made you successors on the earth. The commentators explain it as one people following another, one generation stepping into the homes of the last. The house you call yours had other names on the door. The field you drive past was ploughed by hands now in the ground.
Notice who is doing the making. Not history, not economics, not luck. Huwa, He. The ayah points at Allah before it says a single word about us. We arrived on a stage He built, in a slot He chose, after people He removed. We will leave it at a time He has already marked.
This is where the ego has to put down its keys. We speak of my house, my land, my company, my legacy. But a successor holds nothing by original right. He holds by being placed. The One who placed him is the only one in the story who was placed by no one.
Some hear this and ask why a God would announce His control over the generations. Is He insisting on credit? The ayah answers in its next breath. It does not say our refusal harms Him. It says the harm falls on the one who refuses. He tells us who made us successors for the reason a librarian stamps the date. It is not to be admired. It is so the borrower knows the book goes back.
