Fatir 35:45

“And if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature. But He defers them for a specified term. And when their time comes, then indeed Allāh has ever been, of His servants, Seeing.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Were people taken to task for all they earned, nothing would be left on earth; Allah defers them to a named term and sees them.

A reflection

Everyone here is here by deferral

Read the ayah slowly and notice its scale. It does not say the tyrants would perish, or that a nation would fall. Not a single creature would be left on the earth's back. The accounting it describes would empty the planet.

That one conditional sentence removes a belief most of us carry without noticing: that we are here by right. We assume our place on earth is earned. We think we deserve the breath, the food and the morning. The ayah says otherwise. Everyone walking the earth today walks it by deferral.

Picture a man at a friend's wedding, complaining loudly about his table by the kitchen doors. He does not know the groom quietly paid for his flight and his hotel, knowing he could not afford them. His complaint is not wicked. It is simply blind. He is arguing about his seat in a room he was carried into.

The ego behaves like that guest. It grumbles about its portion while the whole bill for its existence is being covered.

The Prophet ﷺ described this in words recorded in both Sahihs. No one is more patient with hurtful words He hears than Allah, he said. People ascribe a son to Him, and still He gives them health and provision. The provision does not pause while the insult is spoken.

Does Allah say this in order to be thanked? He needs no thanks; the provision was flowing long before anyone noticed. The telling is for us. Someone who sees that his life rests on a deferral he did not earn grows humbler and quieter in complaint. He also grows freer. He stops defending a right he never had, and starts receiving a gift he always had.
