Ya-Sin 36:44

إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَمَتَـٰعًا إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

“Except as a mercy from Us and provision for a time.”

Saheeh International

Essence

You were spared only by mercy, and given life like the morning sun climbing to its height: real, bright, and already turning.

A reflection

Spared, not skilful

A motorcyclist skids on a wet bend, slides across the road, and walks away with a torn jacket. At work the next day he tells the story three times. Each telling gives more credit to his reflexes, his training, the way he tucked his shoulder. By the third telling, the wet bend has become proof of his skill.

The ayah describes the people on the ships in a single phrase. They are not rescued, it said, illā raḥmatan minnā: except as a mercy from Us. One commentator spells out the force of the construction. They are not helped or pulled out for any reason at all, except for a great mercy from Him that calls for it.

Another concise commentary says it even more plainly. Nothing saves them but Our mercy.

That is a hard sentence for the ego. We like our survivals to say something about us. We passed the exam because we revised. We kept the job because we were good. We walked away from the skid because we were quick. Some of that may be true. But the ayah puts every rescue, without exception, under one heading, and it is not competence.

The lexicons trace mercy to the womb: tenderness that shelters, feeds and guards before the child knows it needs anything. On that picture, every time you were spared, something was bending over you that you did not see.

The motorcyclist's reflexes were real. But he did not choose where the kerb was, or that no lorry was coming. The humbling truth of this ayah is not that you did nothing. It is that the decisive part was done for you.
