Ya-Sin 36:45

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

“But when it is said to them, "Beware of what is before you and what is behind you;[1271] perhaps you will receive mercy..."[1272]”

Saheeh International

Essence

They are told to raise a shield both ways so that mercy may reach them, and the sentence breaks off where their answer should be.

A reflection

Taqwa is a shield, not a fright

Many people hear the command ittaqū as "be afraid". Fear what is before you, fear what is behind you. Taqwa becomes a nervous, hunched way of living, always braced for punishment.

The lexicons give the root a different picture. It means pushing harm away from something by putting something between them. A wiqāya is whatever does that. A good saddle was called wāq when it did not rub the camel's back raw. A horse with a sore hoof steps carefully on hard ground, guarding its foot. So the command means: raise a shield between yourself and the blow.

Picture a walker on a scree slope with a twisted ankle. She is not panicking. She is not frozen. She is placing each foot deliberately, testing the ground, choosing her line. That is care, and it gets her down the mountain. Panic would have thrown her off it.

That is the truer picture of taqwa. Not a fright that paralyses, but a care that protects. And look at where the ayah aims it: laʿallakum turḥamūn, that you may be shown mercy. The shield is not the goal. Mercy is. The command to beware is the route by which mercy is meant to reach you.

The Prophet ﷺ gave the shield a size small enough for anyone. Al-Bukhari records him saying: shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. Half a date is not the gesture of a terrified person. It is the gesture of someone who knows the smallest act of care counts.

So when you hear "have taqwa", do not hear "be anxious". Hear: step carefully, and carry your shield. The One who commands it is aiming at your mercy.
