Ya-Sin 36:46

وَمَا تَأْتِيهِم مِّنْ ءَايَةٍ مِّنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ

“And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they are from it turning away.”

Essence

The problem was never a shortage of signs; it was a shoulder turned to every one of them as it arrived.

A reflection

"If God sent me a sign"

People sometimes say, quite sincerely, that they would believe if they were sent a sign. One clear sign, and the doubts would be over. It is an honest-sounding wish, and many believers half share it on their bad days.

This ayah quietly takes that wish apart. Mā taʾtīhim min āyatin: no sign comes to them. Not "no sign has ever come". Signs come constantly. The problem is what happens when they arrive.

One commentator explains that the word āya here covers two things at once. The verses revealed to the Prophet ﷺ, and the signs in creation. Wonders, miracles, and the very signs just listed: the dead earth, the night, the laden ship. The deniers had been shown all of them, in both forms. Every one met the same response.

The early commentators describe that response in one phrase. They do not think about them, and they do not ponder them. A concise commentary adds: they took no benefit from them.

Picture a man scrolling on his phone at a bus stop. He tells his friend he would believe if God gave him one clear sign. Behind the phone, unnoticed, the sun is setting over the rooftops in bands of orange. A sparrow is feeding its young in the gutter. Somewhere in his own chest his heart beats a hundred thousand times a day without being asked.

That is the truer picture. The signs are already arriving, in a steady stream, in the sky and in the Book. What is missing is not evidence but attention. Asking for a new sign while turning from the present ones is like asking for a louder alarm while wearing earplugs. Take the earplugs out first.
