“They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" [The reply will be], "This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."”
Saheeh International
Essence
They wake asking who raised them from their beds, and the answer is a promise the Most Merciful made and the messengers kept telling them.
A reflection
What "our sleeping place" does and does not mean
The phrase "who raised us from our sleeping place?" is one of the most quoted lines in this surah. Many readers take it as a simple statement about death: that the dead are asleep, unaware, untouched, until they wake.
The commentators read it more carefully, and they keep several readings side by side.
One reading: death is likened to sleep, because in both there is no visible action and a rest from deliberate deeds. A second: several early authorities said the deniers will have a slumber between the two blowings. They taste sleep in it, and wake at the second. A third is made explicit by one major commentator. When they see what lies before them, everything they went through in the grave will seem like sleep. He adds that this reading does not deny the punishment of the grave. It only measures it against what follows.
So "sleeping place" is not a doctrine that the dead feel nothing. It is the cry of people who have just woken into something far worse. For a moment, they call the grave a bed.
That is the truer picture. The line is less a description of the grave than a measure of the shock of the Day. Whatever the in-between was, it now seems like rest.
This entry does not argue for one reading over another. The commentators did not need to. What they shared is plain enough to hold. Death is a passage, not an ending. And the waking will be so total that the time before it will feel like a night's sleep. That should change how lightly we treat the life that comes before the sleep.
