Ya-Sin · Makki · ayah 57 of 83

Ya-Sin 36:57

لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَـٰكِهَةٌ وَلَهُم مَّا يَدَّعُونَ

“For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request [or wish]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Fruit for delight, not hunger, and a Host who says "name it": what you call for when nothing is missing shows who you are.

A reflection

Not a catalogue, a host

Most people carry a picture of this ayah without ever having looked at it. Paradise as an endless catalogue. Everything in stock, nothing to pay, a basket that never fills. Some find that picture thrilling. Others find it faintly embarrassing, as if faith ended in a shopping centre.

Both reactions answer a picture the words do not paint.

Start with the fruit. The commentaries note that fruit is not what people eat to stop hunger. In this world it is what comes after the meal, when the need is already met. One of them draws the conclusion directly: there is no hunger there, so eating is never relief from pain. Everything eaten is fruit, even meat, because all of it is delight.

Then notice the sentence does not say they eat. It says for them there is fruit. The food is theirs, placed within reach, and the reins of choice stay in their hands. If they wish, they eat. If not, they leave it.

Then the verb. Yaddaʿūna is a form of the word for calling, bent back on the self: to call for, on your own behalf. An early philologist recorded how the Arabs actually used it. A host would say, call on me for whatever you like. Someone well off was said to be in the best of what he called for.

That is a host's sentence, not a shopkeeper's. A catalogue does not care who you are. A host has already set out the fruit before you arrived, and then turns and asks what else you would like. The ayah is describing a welcome, and the one welcoming is named in the very next ayah.
