Ya-Sin · Makki · ayah 56 of 83
Ya-Sin 36:56
هُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُهُمْ فِى ظِلَـٰلٍ عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ مُتَّكِـُٔونَ
“They and their spouses - in shade, reclining on adorned couches.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After graves and judgement, the passage ends on a shaded couch shared with a spouse: the seat of one who has arrived for good.
A reflection
Not a luxury hotel for one
Ask people to describe Paradise and many reach, half-consciously, for the picture of a luxury resort. A private villa, a pool, silence, and above all no other people. Heaven as the ultimate escape from everyone.
This ayah begins with two words that quietly overturn that picture. Hum wa azwājuhum: they and their spouses.
One commentator explains why the ayah comes here. It describes, he says, how the people of the Garden are occupied and delighted. It then completes that picture with what adds to their joy: the company of their spouses. The delight of the previous ayah is not solitary. It is shared.
The word azwāj has appeared once before in this passage. At 36:36, Allah was glorified as the One who created all the pairs, including pairs from among people themselves. The surah ends this movement where that ayah pointed. Pairs created in this world, together in the next.
That is the truer picture. The Garden is not a retreat from love but its fulfilment. Its first description after the delight of 36:55 is of people sitting together.
Think of a couple in their seventies at a seaside café. Fifty years married, and they still sit on the same side of the table, both facing the sea, his hand resting on hers. They have argued, nursed each other, buried parents, raised children. They do not need to talk much now. The ayah offers people like them a shade that never moves and a seat they never have to leave.
And it offers something to every reader. Whatever company is good and lawful and loved, the Garden does not abolish it. It perfects it.
