Ya-Sin 36:9
“And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.”
Saheeh International
Essence
A barrier ahead and one behind, pressed so close they become the blindfold: and the man inside them thinks the road is clear.
A reflection
The blind spot shows you a clear road
A driver checks his mirror before pulling out onto the motorway. The mirror shows an empty lane. He indicates and begins to move across, and a horn blares from a car that was sitting exactly in the blind spot. The mirror had not lied. It had simply shown him a clear road where there was not one.
Most of us read this ayah as a miracle story about other people. Enemies of the Prophet ﷺ who could not see him, a wall that appeared from nowhere. Some commentaries do preserve accounts like that. But the plainest commentary calls this, too, a likeness: the ways to faith blocked off for them. A modern concise commentary is careful about the order. This came upon them after their stubbornness and persistence had shown themselves. And a classical commentator puts his finger on the most frightening part of it.
The person inside these barriers, he says, is blocked, and the way of truth is closed to him. But he does not see the barrier, and he does not know he is blocked. So he thinks he is on the straight path and not astray.
That is the deepest blindness the ayah describes. Not the dark of a man who knows he cannot see. The confidence of a man who sees a clear lane and is wrong.
It cuts close. Nobody thinks of themselves as walled in. Every one of us experiences our own view as simply the view. The prejudice feels like realism. The habit feels like personality. The neglected duty feels like a reasonable priority.
What helps with a blind spot is never a better mirror. It is turning your head, deliberately, to look where the mirror cannot show you. In faith that means asking people you trust what you cannot see, and asking Allah directly. Show me myself. Show me the road as it is.
