Ya-Sin · Makki · ayah 10 of 83
Ya-Sin 36:10
وَسَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
“And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.”
Saheeh International
Essence
When a warning and its absence weigh the same, the warning has not lost its weight: the scale in the listener's hand has broken.
A reflection
As if I had never read it before today
On a Saturday at a weekend gathering, a man in his thirties is moved to tears by a talk on prayer. He hugs the speaker afterwards and promises himself he will never miss the dawn prayer again. By Thursday he has slept through it twice. On Friday he does not remember that he cried.
One commentary preserves a striking report about this ayah. A just ruler of the early generations confronted a man known for rejecting the divine decree. He asked him to recite the opening of Ya-Sin. The man read on until he reached this line. It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe. He stopped and said, by Allah, it is as if I had never read this before today. He declared that he repented. The report goes on to say that the change did not last.
Nothing here rests on that account. But it captures this ayah from the inside better than any argument. Most of us assume the line describes hardened enemies of the truth, people for whom warnings do nothing. We assume that on us, warnings work.
The man in the report was moved. He heard the text as if for the first time. And still, in the end, the warning and its absence came to the same thing. Being moved was not the test.
That is the uncomfortable mirror this ayah holds up. The question is not whether a reminder stirs you. Many things stir us. It is whether anything is different a week later. A talk, a funeral, a verse can move you to tears and leave your Thursdays untouched. Then, for that part of your life, warned and not warned have quietly become the same.
Tears are a beginning. They are not a verdict. The verdict is what you do next.
