As-Saffat 37:150

أَمْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَـٰثًا وَهُمْ شَـٰهِدُونَ

“Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

'Did We create the angels female, while they watched?': a claim about creation is only as good as the claimant's presence at it.

A reflection

Were you there when He made them?

Am khalaqnā: or did We create. Allah speaks as the Creator of the angels. Elsewhere the Quran calls them honoured servants who do not run ahead of Him in speech (21:26–27). Then He asks: wa-hum shāhidūn, and were they present?

The question collapses a whole attitude. The Quraysh spoke about the nature of angels with complete assurance. Yet nobody stood beside Allah while He created anything. Another ayah says it directly. I did not make them witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor even their own creation (18:51). A rhetorical commentary links the two ayat.

This is majesty at its plainest. There is one Creator, and every creature arrived after the fact. Everything we know about the unseen, we know because He told us.

Our pride rarely admits this. Picture a man at a dinner party explaining, after one documentary, exactly how the ancient pyramids were built. He speaks with the confidence of a site foreman. Nobody at the table can contradict him, so he grows more certain as he goes. He was not there. Neither was anyone who made the documentary.

If that is foolish about stones, it is far worse about angels and the One who made them. The ayah shrinks the ego by asking one patient question: where were you?

Some readers ask whether the question is mocking, and whether mockery suits God. A rhetorical commentary does call it mockery and a charge of ignorance. But it mocks a claim, not a person's worth. Allah needs no one's praise, and loses nothing by our errors. He exposes this one because it misleads people about Him, and the people misled are the ones harmed.
