Al-Kahf · Makki · ayah 51 of 110
Al-Kahf 18:51
“I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of themselves, and I would not have taken the misguiders as assistants.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The helpers He does not need are named with the word for the upper arm, where a man's strength sits.
A reflection
He would not take an arm
The last word of the verse is the upper arm, from elbow to shoulder. The lexicons say so plainly, and then explain that it came to mean a helper because that is where a man's strength sits. From the same root come the verb for being somebody's arm, and the word for a man's clan.
So the sentence reads: I would not take the misleaders as an arm. One commentary glosses it exactly as helpers.
Another spells out the claim in full. I am the one independent in creating all things, managing and measuring them alone. There is no partner with Me in that, no minister, no counsellor and no equal.
Notice where that lands in this surah. Nine verses ago a man had no clan to help him. Seventeen verses ago he boasted of being mightier in men. The whole trial of wealth turned on who stands beside you.
And here the One who needs no arm says so, in the word for an arm.
There is a violin in one collection with no label inside it. Three experts have examined it and none will attribute it. It is unmistakably fine, and it belongs to no workshop, no school and no pupil of anybody.
That is a strange kind of discomfort for a specialist, and it is the right discomfort for this verse.
Pride is almost always a theory of attribution. We want to know whose hand, whose school, whose help, and above all what our own share was. The verse removes the whole question by removing the committee. Nobody assisted. Nobody watched. There is no second name on the work, and there never was one to negotiate with.
