As-Saffat 37:16

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

“When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The deniers offer dust and bones as proof the dead cannot rise, yet the Prophet ﷺ named a bone they will rise from.

A reflection

The bone that does not decay

Turāban wa-ʿiẓāman: dust and bones. One commentator notes the order. Dust comes first, because the soft, visible parts turn to dust; the bones remain longer. The deniers were describing decay accurately, flesh gone, frame left, and offering it as proof that nothing could return.

The word for bone, ʿaẓm, comes from the root of greatness. The lexicons say bone is named for its strength: the hard frame that holds a body up.

The Prophet ﷺ said something about exactly that frame. Everything of a human being decays except one bone, the base of the spine. From it creation will be reassembled on the Day of Resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). The deniers pointed to bones as the end. He pointed to a bone as the beginning.
