As-Saffat 37:161

فَإِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ

“So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Three words bind a worshipper to what he worships, like a man and his estate: whatever you serve becomes your companion, and you become its.

A reflection

Every man and his estate

Read the ayah slowly and notice that it feels unfinished. So you, and what you worship. Then nothing. The sentence completes itself in the next ayah, but the commentators noticed something in the pause.

One classical reading takes the wa, 'and', in the sense of 'with'. The Arabs had a saying: kullu rajulin wa ḍayʿatuh, every man and his estate. It is a complete sentence with no verb. It needs none. A man and his land simply go together; say the one and you have said the other. On this reading the ayah means: you are paired with your gods. You are their companions. You do not leave them, and you never stop serving them.

Picture a woman whose whole weekend orbits her allotment. Her family no longer ask where she is on a Saturday. They walk down past the compost bins and there she is, kneeling in the onions. Nobody calls it worship. But if you wanted to describe her, you would describe her with the plot. Woman and allotment. Every man and his estate.

The allotment is harmless, even lovely. The ayah is pointing at something else. Each of us is said in one breath with something. A name, a cause, a bank balance, a grievance, a person. People speak of us and it in the same sentence because that is where we are always found.

A second classical reading takes mā, 'what', as the act rather than the object: you, and your worshipping. Then it is not only the thing you serve but the habit of serving it that walks beside you.

So the ayah is a mirror before it is an argument. Ask honestly: if someone described you in three words, what would the third word be? You, and ... what? Whatever fills that gap is the companion you have chosen. The surah has spent a long time showing who should fill it.
