As-Saffat 37:160

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

“Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Out of everyone brought to account and everyone who described Him wrongly, one group is worked free: the servants Allah has made His own.

A reflection

Snagged, then worked free

This is the fourth time As-Saffat sounds this line, and the earlier entries trace ikhlāṣ to ghee cleared of its dregs. The lexicons hold another picture in the same root, and it suits this place. Khalaṣa is said of a thing that had been caught fast and then got free and came away safe. Yarn that had snarled was said to be worked loose the same way. This usage is recorded in the classical dictionaries.

Now read the ayah where it stands. Most commentators take the exception back to the previous claim: they will surely be brought. Everyone who drew a family line between Allah and the jinna will be summoned to the Fire. Except Allah's servants, the mukhlaṣīn. One commentary puts it plainly: they are saved.

Picture a crowded station at rush hour. A girl's school-bag strap snags on a turnstile as the crowd presses forward. She cannot go on and cannot go back. A guard steps over, works the strap loose with his thumb, and lifts her through the side gate.

That is the shape of the word. Mukhlaṣ is passive: one who has been freed. It is not that these servants never felt the pull. They were caught like everyone else, in a world full of false descriptions of God. But Allah worked them loose.
