As-Saffat 37:85

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ

“[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?”

Saheeh International

Essence

A sound heart showed itself as one plain question, asked of a father and a whole people: what is it, actually, that you worship?

A reflection

What has your life worn smooth?

Mādhā taʿbudūn: what is it you worship? The verb comes from a root with a striking picture. The lexicons say a road was muʿabbad when many feet had trodden it level. It no longer resisted the traveller; it had become the easy way. A camel trained for errands was muʿabbad too. ʿIbāda, worship, carries that sense of a self made yielding.

Hear Ibrahim's question with that picture in mind. Not only: which statue do you bow to? But: what have you yielded to so often that your life now runs along it without resistance?

Picture a woman who tries a small experiment. She takes a week of her diary and four highlighters. Yellow for work, green for family, blue for prayer and Quran, pink for her phone and screens. At the end of the week she lays the pages on the kitchen table. Pink has swamped them. Blue appears in thin stripes at dawn and dusk. She never decided this. It simply wore itself into the shape of her days.

Ibrahim's people did not think of themselves as slaves to stone. They thought of themselves as normal, pious and loyal to custom. The question cut through all that. What is it, actually, that you yield to?

The concise commentaries hear rebuke in it: what is this that you worship, besides Allah? It is not a request for information. It is a mirror held up.

The question has not aged. Worship is not only ritual. It is whatever the self has become yielding towards. So run your own audit. Look at where your hours, your money and your attention go without resistance. Whatever has worn the smoothest road through your life is answering Ibrahim's question for you. Roads can be re-laid. Each prayer on time is a step on the other path.
