Essence

The angels name their whole identity in one word: we are the ones who declare Allah far above everything unworthy said of Him.

A reflection

Keeping Him far from our small pictures

Al-musabbiḥūn are those who perform tasbīḥ. The commentators define it as tanzīh, declaring Allah clear of everything unworthy of Him. Tanzīh itself means putting something at a distance. The Arabs said subḥāna min someone, 'how far he is from that', as an expression of wonder. So the angels are saying: our work is to keep Allah far from every unworthy picture of Him.

The context makes this pointed. The idolaters had pictured Allah as a father with daughters, a being with kin and needs. One commentator notes that the angels' tasbīḥ includes clearing Him of exactly that. The very beings the Makkans called His daughters stand up and say: we are the ones who declare Him far above such talk.

Now think of a man who has written a book. Sales are slow. Late at night he logs in under invented names and writes five-star reviews of his own work. 'Life-changing.' 'A masterpiece.' He is managing his image, polishing it, needing it to be seen a certain way. That is the ego at work: shrinking the truth to fit what it wants.

We do something similar with Allah. We make Him smaller, more like us. A God who needs us, who can be bargained with, who thinks as we think. Tasbīḥ is the discipline of refusing that. Every time a believer says subḥān Allāh, he lets go of a picture too small for his Lord.

Someone may ask: if countless angels already glorify Him, does He need our glorification too? Is He hungry for praise? Sahih Muslim reports that the Prophet ﷺ was asked which speech is best. He said: 'What Allah chose for His angels, or for His servants: subḥān Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih.' It is chosen for the servants as a gift. Allah is the Free of need (35:15). The benefit of tasbīḥ goes to the one who says it, whose picture of God grows truer with every word.
