As-Saffat 37:165

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

“And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].”

Saheeh International

Essence

The angels describe themselves by one posture, standing ranged in rows before their Lord, and every believer who straightens a row joins them.

A reflection

Shoulder to shoulder with a stranger

A man has been in a new city for three weeks. He moved for work. He knows the route to the office, the nearest supermarket and nobody at all. His evenings are long and quiet. On Friday he finds the mosque, takes his shoes off at the door and joins a row. A stranger steps in beside him and closes the gap until their shoulders touch. The man smells faintly of engine oil. Neither knows the other's name. For ten minutes, the new arrival is not alone in the city.

The angels say: we are those ranged in rows. Sahih Muslim reports the Prophet ﷺ naming three ways this community was favoured. The first: 'Our rows have been made like the rows of the angels.' Every congregation that lines up for prayer is, in its small way, copying the heavens.

This is not something Allah needs. He wants no provision from His creatures (51:57), and whoever strives, strives for himself (29:6). The rows are a gift to those who stand in them.

And what a gift for this age. Many people now live among crowds and feel entirely alone. They have hundreds of contacts and nobody whose shoulder touches theirs. The hunger is not only for meaning. It is for belonging, for a place in a line where you are expected and you fit.

The row gives that without asking for anything first. Not your job title, your accent or your history. Only that you stand straight and close the gap. The man smelling of engine oil did not ask who the newcomer was. He stepped closer.

In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest (13:28). Part of that rest, for many, is in the row itself: standing where the angels stand, in the same posture, with strangers who are not strangers for those few minutes. Next time you pray in congregation, notice the shoulder beside you, and thank Allah for it.
