As-Saffat · Makki · ayah 170 of 182
As-Saffat 37:170
فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
“But they disbelieved in it,[1313] so they are going to know.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The reminder they asked for arrived, and they covered it over; one small letter holds the whole gap between the wish and the refusal.
A reflection
A whole arrival in one letter
Read the passage in sequence. They used to say: if only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples, we would have been Allah's purified servants. Then: fa-kafarū bihi, so they disbelieved in it.
Something is missing between those two sentences, and the commentators noticed it. Disbelieved in what? The ayah never says 'then the reminder came'. One commentator calls the fa here a letter of eloquent compression. It stands for a whole unstated clause. Then a reminder came to them, and what a reminder: the master of reminders, a book that oversees every other. And they disbelieved in it. Another commentator adds: how far apart were the beginning of their affair and its end.
The arrival of the Quran, the event they had been wishing for, is folded into a single letter. The gap between wish and refusal is that short.
Picture a young man who has wanted, for a year, to sit down with an older mentor in his field. He emails. He asks friends for introductions. He talks about it constantly: if only I could get an hour with her. Finally her assistant replies. Thursday, ten o'clock, her office. He accepts. On Thursday morning he wakes up anxious, tells himself he is not ready, and sends an apology. The meeting he chased for a year is dismissed in a single sentence.
That is the shape the fa captures. The longing was long. The refusal was quick. And the speed of the refusal suggests the longing was never quite what it seemed.
The Quran does not dramatise the moment. It does not describe the Makkans' faces when the first ayat were recited, or the debates that followed. It simply moves from 'if only' to 'they disbelieved', with one letter between.
Ask where in your own life the fa sits. What did you ask Allah for, and how quickly did you turn from it when it came?
