“We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."”
Saheeh International
Essence
The Makkans claimed the surah's highest title for themselves in advance: give us a book and we will be Allah's purified servants.
A reflection
Claiming the refrain
Anyone who has listened to this surah from the beginning will hear something sharp in this ayah. The phrase ʿibād Allāh al-mukhlaṣīn, Allah's purified servants, is not new. It is the surah's refrain.
It appears first when the people of the Fire are described: except Allah's purified servants (37:40). It returns as the stories of the prophets begin: see the end of those who were warned, except Allah's purified servants (37:73–74). It returns in the story of Ilyas (37:128). And once more, just before this passage, Allah is cleared of what is said about Him (37:159–160). Each time, the phrase marks the people who are saved, the ones the warnings do not touch.
Now the Makkans pick it up. If only we had a reminder, they say, we would have been Allah's purified servants. They claim the title of the refrain, the very category the whole surah has been describing. They claim it in advance, conditionally, for a future that would never come.
Picture a song with a chorus that the band has sung after every verse. Near the end, someone who arrived late and missed most of it grabs the microphone. He sings the chorus loudly, as if he had been there all along. The words are right. The tune is right. But everyone in the room knows he has not earned it.
That is the dramatic irony of this ayah. The surah has shown what it costs to be among the mukhlaṣīn. Ibrahim in the fire. A father and son at the place of sacrifice. Yunus in the belly of the fish. The Makkans want the title without the story.
For the reader, the refrain becomes a question. The surah has sung it five times now. Each time it describes people who were tested and found pure. Do we want the chorus, or are we willing to live one of the verses?
